African naturopathic education: Ghana’s model using competency-based curriculum

Despite the over 62 years of Naturopathy’s existence in Ghanaian jurisdiction, no single tertiary program Naturopathy or Complementary and Alternative Medicine is taught. The practice has not been streamlined properly structured. Those who engage Naturopathic trade mostly receive their education through correspondence from unrecognized unaccredited foreign schools that teach a limited aspect naturopathy. : Following development approval two programs; Higher National Diploma (HND) for training Naturopaths Bachelor Technology Holistic Medicine, 5-year Physicians, this paper provides critical evaluation curricula approved by Commission Technical Vocational Education Training (CTVET) Ghana. This employs sequential two-stage qualitative process. In phase one, were submitted to World Federation (WNF) Canada, evaluation. Phase involved document analysis using curriculum recommended Health Organization (WHO), (WNF), South African curriculum. An in-depth comparison with conducted, together abstracted WNF responses which then analyzed thematically. After necessary recommendations adopted. met international standard. also strengthened mandatory general area competence training. Bachelor’s total clock hours 5,979, surpasses degree Naturopathy(5,950) hours. naturopathic elective subjects meet standards. Issues raised Federations all addressed strengthen program.
